Can we fear an overdose of catnip?

Can we fear an overdose of catnip?
Really exciting for some cats, catnip seems to have no effect on others, but is it totally harmless for them?

What is catnip?
Catnip, catnip or Nepeta cataria, is a euphoric plant on some cats, who then roll on their backs purring with happiness.

Sensitivity to this herb is based on genetic factors, leaving some cats completely impassive. Very young cats, for example, are completely indifferent to catnip. It is possible that your kitten does not react at all to a catnip toy.

Is catnip safe for cats?
Catnip is safe for cats and does not cause addiction. The effects of the plant vary with the cat, ranging from excitement to drowsiness, but usually do not last more than 15-20 minutes.

If you have catnip at home, be sure to store it out of reach, especially children. Indeed, although nontoxic, it can cause in humans headaches and digestive disorders.

Grow your own catnip
Plant the seeds outdoors, in early spring, in a sunny location. The seeds germinate after one to two weeks. You can also plant cuttings directly into the ground. When the plant has bloomed, cut 10 to 20 cm (the plant will regrow and may be reborn in the following season if the winter is not too harsh).

To dry the grass, remove all the leaves and remove the stems. Arrange the leaves on trays, 5 cm high. Place them in a well ventilated place. Mix the leaves twice a day for 2 to 3 weeks. When the leaves become friable, crumble and form flakes, store them in an airtight box. To allow your cat to enjoy it, sprinkle the soil (for example, at the base of its scratching post), or enclose a small amount in a sock to make a toy.
